I bought this King Palm Tree root in 2016, at a plant sale event at UCR. It has been very hardy, surviving significant drought conditions, here in Southern California. I have propagated it several times, by division. From one small plant, I have grown 4 larger palms. They grow very fast, and thanks to the drought ending winter rains of 2024, they have outgrown their pots.
I had already noticed them growing roots out of the pot and into the ground so, I’ve been planning on repotting for a few months but, I wasn’t sure where to put them. I have also been observing the raised garden bed project, where I intend to create a food forest using organic, biodiverse, and renewable practices. One of my main concerns is that, even though it is in the most shaded part of the property, it is still exposed to plenty of intense sunlight.
I have been contemplating various shade options and want to use something as eco-friendly and efficient as possible. I have to consider the intense heat, as well as the occasional winds. As well as a bamboo fence or a wood trellis, I’ve also considered using Corn, Bamboo, or Mammoth Sunflowers as a natural barrier. So, the natural solution appears to be these palm divisions. They need more room to grow. They are likely to outgrow their positions here but, it should be easy enough to move them in a season or two. In the meantime, they might provide some significant shade to the driest part of the container.
Stick around and I'll keep you posted on their progress.
